Chapter Ten

Friday November 6, 1987

“I’ll have the buffet,” Daddy said to our Shoney’s waitress.

“Me, too,” Matt added.

“I have the buffet as well. Thank you so much,” I said, handing the waitress my menu.

Mom ordered an omelet with Swiss cheese and an English muffin. We certainly were a cheery looking group. Bethany had on her new raspberry turtleneck that matched her grandmother’s top. I wore a yellow sweater with a matching scrunchie in my side ponytail.

“I’ll stay with Bethany while everyone goes up to the buffet,” Mom offered. Bethany studied the menu with her grandmother noticing all the pictures of ice cream – she was her mother’s daughter!

I loaded my plate up with scrambled eggs, grits, sausage, and orange slices. I hoped Bethany had an appetite. There was way too much food on my plate. As I glanced from my plate to the buffet, I noticed Anna and Randolph ordering their breakfast across the restaurant. After the waitress left, they leaned over so their foreheads were almost touching. Randolph shook his head and Anna nodded her head to contradict him. Then she gave him a look I will never forget. If looks could kill, then Anna was a murderer.

“Excuse me ma’am. Can I get some grits,” an older gentleman in jeans and a red flannel shirt said politely holding his plate.

How long had I been standing there? “I’m so sorry. I backed away from the buffet and right into a waitress carrying a tray of plates. Everything came crashing down.

“Any bears in that act, honey?” Daddy asked, gently taking my plate from me and carrying it to the table.

I apologized about twenty times before Matt came and led me back to the table. We had to step carefully over broken plates, piles of food, and shards of glass. It was such a huge mess!

“Okay, Mommy?” Bethany asked.

“Mommy was distracted. She was staring off into space,” Matt replied.

“I’m so embarrassed,” I admitted. “I bumped right into the waitress.” I felt humiliated.

“They’ll probably ban us from Shoney’s for life,” Matt teased.

I glanced over to the table where Anna and Randolph were sitting. They were eating silently like an older married couple. Steven had said that Anna could keep Randolph in line, and I believed him.
